Global Health

To protect the American people, the United States actively works to prevent, detect, and respond to infectious disease threats. Outbreaks of infectious disease do not respect national borders. Halting and treating diseases at their points of origin is one of the best and most economical ways of saving lives and protecting Americans.

The Bureau of Global Health Security and Diplomacy (GHSD) at the U.S. Department of State leads and coordinates the Department’s work on strengthening global health security to prevent, detect, and respond to infectious diseases, including HIV/AIDS. The Bureau leads U.S. diplomatic engagement; leverages and helps coordinate U.S. foreign assistance; and promotes international cooperation at the national, regional, and multilateral levels to better protect the United States and the world from health threats. The Bureau elevates and integrates global health security as a core component of U.S. national security and foreign policy.
