Prior to that, she served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Central Africa and Public Diplomacy. She was previously the Acting Deputy Spokesperson for the U.S. State Department from March to August 2018. Prior assignments include Deputy Executive Secretary to Secretaries Kerry and Tillerson, Senior Advisor at the Foreign Service Institute, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Public Diplomacy in the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs, and the Office of the Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan. Ms. Fitzsimmons has worked in a number of regional bureaus during her 26-year career and has spent the past three years focused on the Africa region. This substantive experience, coupled with her extensive management and public diplomacy experience and demonstrated ability to lead large interagency teams as well as policy-oriented offices, makes her a well-qualified candidate to be the U.S. Ambassador to the Togolese Republic. Fitzsimmons has also served in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Cambodia, India and Bulgaria. Earlier in her career, she worked in the U.S. Department of State’s Operations Center and as Deputy Director of the Executive Secretariat. She holds a B.A. from the University of Virginia and a certificate from the International Division at Waseda University in Tokyo. She speaks French, Chinese, and Bulgarian and is the recipient of a Senior Foreign Service Performance Award and a Superior Honor Award.
