The American International School of Algiers (AISA) is an independent, coeducational day school offering an American education to students in pre-kindergarten through grade 8. AISA also offers the possibility of a primarily online high school, with in-person teacher support. The AISA program is designed to provide high-quality American teaching in a happy and safe environment that enables students to develop a love of learning in a caring community.

Mission: The American International School of Algiers pursues academic excellence for students through an American-based education that nurtures responsible, respectful, and globally conscious lifelong learners, while fostering a spirit of friendship and exchange.

Governance: AISA is governed by the Board of Trustees. Guided by the AISA Constitution and By-Laws, the Trustees approve all budgets, policies, and other matters of significance, focusing on maintaining the mission and fiscal well-being of the school. Meeting four times yearly, the Trustees work behind the scenes to ensure the successful continuation of the American school, including setting policy, leading fund raising, and assisting with public relations. The school’s legal status and foundations of governance are defined in the AISA Constitution, the AISA By-Laws, and the Agreement between the Government of the United States of America and the Government of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria signed December 29, 2015 in Washington, D.C., U.S.A.

Curriculum: AISA follows Project AERO’s U.S. Common Core Standards Plus – www.projectaero.org. Alongside the core subjects of math, science, English language arts, and social studies, the AISA program offers French, conversational Arabic, Algerian studies, art, IT, library and physical education classes. Student assessment practices ensure individualized teaching and learning aligned with American educational standards. The AISA character traits embedded in the school programs guide all students to be compassionate, cooperative, ethical, independent, respectful, and responsible citizens of the world.

Faculty: In the 2023-2024 school year, AISA has 18 total staff including 9 teachers, 8 of whom are U.S. citizens and 1 host country national. Teachers must have an American teaching certification.

Enrollment: In August 2023, 36 students were enrolled in grades K-8. Of the total 21 are U.S. citizens; 4 are host-country nationals; and the remaining 11 students are third-country nationals.

Housed in a large multilevel villa, the facilities include a front garden with play equipment, a back garden with benches, covered seating, and a small soccer field. The facility also includes a library with over 5,000 volumes in English, and a computer lab. Transportation is not provided by the school, and students bring their own lunches.

Finances: In the 2023-2024 school year, 100% of the school’s revenue is from tuition, with the remainder being from donations and grants. Annual tuition for all students is $30,000 yearly.
