American School of The Hague is an independent, coeducational day school, which offers a university-preparatory, U.S.-style educational program from preschool through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. The school year comprises two semesters extending from mid-August to mid-June. The school’s mission reads: “We build a better world as we become better human beings, hear and value every voice, keep every promise, and celebrate every achievement.” The school has the following vision: “We are determined to create a school where everyone is confident and able to take control of their own learning, and the world is our classroom.”

Organization: The school was founded in 1953 and is governed by a board of trustees, elected for three-year terms by the parents of students enrolled.

Curriculum: Instruction is in English. The U.S.-based, college preparatory program includes differentiation throughout the elementary, middle and high schools, with the Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate Diploma programs available at the high school level. French, Dutch, German, and Spanish are offered as additional languages. There is no religious instruction. A broad program of extracurricular and athletics activities is offered. The school is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). ASH accepts students with varying abilities and learning differences. Each division has a learning support program aimed at meeting the unique needs of students. The special education program with dedicated classrooms and specialist staff offers limited space. Admissions to the school are managed in order to protect the student-teacher ratios and ensure the highest quality of education.

Faculty: In the 2023-2024 school year, ASH has 243 total staff including 187 teachers, 63 of whom are U.S. citizens, 39 host-country nationals, and 46 third-country nationals representing 24 countries. Faculty members are experienced, certified teachers, most with one or more advanced degrees.

Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2023-2024 school year, enrollment was 1,020. Of the total, 357 were U.S. citizens, 130 host-country nationals, and 533 third-country nationals.

Facilities: American School of The Hague is located in Wassenaar, a residential community near The Hague. The school serves its student population at its main campus (11 acres) and early childhood center (3.5 acres). The main campus houses students in grades 3-12, and the ECC campus is the location for preschool through grade 2 students. Both campus locations offer spacious classrooms; specialized teaching areas; wireless Internet; centrally located libraries plus separate elementary school and early childhood libraries totaling 46,600 volumes; computer and science laboratories; three cafeterias; excellent spaces for the arts, including a 450-seat theater, music/movement classrooms, studio for art, photography, and multi-media; and, for athletics, two gymnasia, two sport halls, and playing fields.

Finances: In the 2023-2024 school year, annual tuition rates are as follows: kindergarten I: €16,345; elementary school (grades pre-KII-4): €21,045; middle school (grades 5-8): €23,900; high school (grades 9-12): €25,535. In addition, the school also charges a one-time non-refundable enrollment fee of €6,265 and an annual capital levy fee of €4,240 per year. (All fees quoted in euros.)
