Caroline D'Angelo

Caroline D’Angelo is the Acting Chief Sustainability Officer (Acting CSO) and leads the Greening Diplomacy Initiative (GDI) for the U.S. Department of State. She is also acting as the Managing Director of the Consulting and Advanced Projects directorate in the Office of Management Strategy and Solutions (M/SS). As the Acting CSO, she is responsible for developing and leading the Department’s overarching sustainability strategy; overseeing the Department’s compliance with energy, sustainability, and climate executive orders and statutes; and championing innovative efforts. She leads an environmental Internet of Things initiative that includes the Department’s global Air Quality Monitoring program, the ZephAir mobile app, and a smart metering network in more than 120 locations worldwide. Under her leadership, GDI serves as a convener and catalyst for the thousands of employees who serve on the more than 120 Green Teams at embassies and consulates around the world. She joined the Department in 2013 as a Presidential Management Fellow and has completed special projects and assignments in the White House Council on Environmental Quality, U.S. Embassies Brasilia and Lima, and the Under Secretary for Management’s office. She has received two Superior Honor Awards and four Meritorious Honor Awards. Prior to joining the Department, she managed the Pulitzer Center’s award-winning e-books division and worked as a staff writer on sustainable business at the Wharton School. She has a bachelor’s degree in religious studies from the University of Virginia and a master’s in environmental studies from the University of Pennsylvania.
