Dr. Harveen Bergquist

Dr. Harveen Bergquist currently serves as the Director for the Directorate of Operational Medicine within the Bureau of Medical Services at the U.S. Department of State. In this role she is responsible for overseeing the entire operational medicine program at the State Department which is tasked with developing, planning, resourcing, and executing medical contingency plans to enhance the health and safety of all U.S. and allied diplomats abroad, particularly in high-threat and medically austere environments. She joined the State Department in 2020 as a Medical Officer within the Directorate of Operational Medicine. Harveen completed her Emergency Medicine residency training at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, NJ, and an International Emergency Medicine Fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard University. She also holds an MSc in Global Health Sciences from Oxford University and an MSc in Development Management from the London School of Economics and Political Science. Prior to joining the State Department, Harveen was an Assistant Professor in Emergency Medicine at USC Keck School of Medicine and the Associate Director of the International Emergency Medicine Fellowship. During this time, she served as a consultant with the World Health Organization to develop emergency care systems in low-and-middle income countries across the Middle East and Africa including Jordan, Pakistan, Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, and Mozambique. She also has prior experience working in refugee camps and in disaster response.
