Joe Scovitch

Joe Scovitch serves as Acting Deputy Coordinator for Global Health Security, where he leads a team of diplomats and public health experts to strengthen global health security capacity and respond to international outbreaks of infectious diseases. He has been at the forefront of the U.S. government’s international response to health threats including the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2018-2020 Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He has led efforts to increase global access to vaccines, diagnostics, and therapeutics; increase international financing for health programming; intensify U.S. global health security partnership with foreign partners; and elevate health issues as a key component of national security and multisectoral strategic planning. Previously, Mr. Scovitch served as Chief of Staff in the State Department’s Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs and for the Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan. He has served as a Senior Watch Officer in the State Department’s Operations Center and as Deputy Senior Coordinator in the Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons, where he oversaw production of the 2014 and 2015 Trafficking in Persons in Reports. Mr. Scovitch spent 2011 as a Brookings Fellow on the Senate Finance Committee and has served in additional roles in the U.S. Senate, U.S Mission to the United Nations, and Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs. He holds a Master of Public Administration degree from the George Washington University and bachelor’s degrees from the University of Maryland in Government and Politics and Mechanical Engineering.
