Seth Foti

Seth J. Foti, Diplomatic Courier, died on August 23, 2000, in Manama, Bahrain, in the line of duty. He was aboard Gulf Air Flight 72, which crashed during landing. In a memorial service in his honor on September 1, 2000, Under Secretary of State for Management Bonnie Cohen noted that, although he joined the Diplomatic Courier Service only 14 months earlier, Seth “quickly distinguished himself as a true professional. He understood the importance of his tasks and performed them confidently. He cheerfully accepted difficult assignments, and was known for making even the difficult jobs fun….” U.S. Ambassador to Bahrain Johnny Young spoke about his commitment to family and colleagues, and the value of his service to the U.S. Embassy in Manama. With a Russian Studies degree from George Mason University, Seth Foti joined the U.S. Department of State as a diplomatic courier in 1999, having previously worked as a contractor working at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow. Shortly before his death, he earned a Franklin Award for managing a shipment of 127 six-wheel trucks from Italy to Sierra Leone for a U.N. sponsored project. “[Seth] quickly distinguished himself as a true professional.
