Lisbon, Portugal: Carlucci American International School of Lisbon: 2023-2024 Fact Sheet

The Carlucci American International School of Lisbon, founded in 1956, is a nonprofit, nondenominational, coeducational day school that offers an American program of study to approximately 740 students from early childhood (age three) through grade 12 (approximately age 18). The school year is comprised of four quarters.

Organization: CAISL is governed by a three-member board of trustees, two appointed by the U.S. Embassy, and one appointed by Visteon Portuguesa. The school’s senior management team consists of the school Director, Elementary Principal, Secondary Principal, and Business Manager.

Curriculum: The curriculum is that of U.S. college-preparatory public schools, including a program of studies leading to the American high school diploma. The school’s testing program includes the National Merit and College Board tests. Instruction is in English. Portuguese is taught as both a native and a foreign language. CAISL graduates go on to colleges and universities in the United States, the United Kingdom, Portugal, and around the world. Special services to support mild learning disabilities are provided. Psychological testing and private remedial assistance are available in the community. CAISL is an authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) World School and offers the IB Diploma Program for the last two years of high school which can be taken in addition to the high school diploma. CAISL is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSA) and is licensed by the Portuguese Ministry of Education (ME).

Faculty: In the 2023-2024 school year, CAISL has 146 total staff including 99 teachers, 37 of whom are U.S. citizens, 44 host-country nationals, and 19 third-country nationals. Our faculty represent eight different nations including the U.S., Portugal, Canada, Ireland, Brazil, the U.K., Romania, South Africa and Venezuela.

Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2023-2024 school year, enrollment was 736. Of the total, 206 were U.S. citizens, 170 were host-country nationals, and 360 were from third-country nationals. We have students representing 57 nations enrolled at CAISL.

Facilities: The campus comprises three academic buildings; a covered gymnasium of 15,000 square foot; more than 100,000 square foot of exterior sports fields; a snack-bar and cafeteria; a fine arts center with dedicated classrooms for music, art, and drama; and a 450-seat fully equipped theater. The academic buildings include two library/media centers, one for younger students and one for older students (with over 40,000 items including print, non-print, audio-visual, and electronic resources), and four science labs. In terms of technology, in addition to all the tools to enhance learning, each student in grades 6 through 12 is provided a laptop, at no additional charge, to use at school and at home as a tool for learning. Students in grades 2-5 have available at school a one-to-one computer environment.

Finances: In the 2023-2024 school year, tuition rates are as follows: EC3&4 – Kindergarten €9,692; Grades 1 – 2 – €12,092; Grades 3 – 5 – €13,444; Grades 6 – 8 – €15,272; Grades 9 – 12 – €20,532. The school also charges a one-time registration fee of €500, and an annual building fee of €1,953, payable for 5 years beginning in Grade 1. The annual optional bus fee varies depending on the number of services required, and ranges from €1,580 – €3,792. Optional lunches cost €780 per year for EC3-kindergarten, and €1,048 for grades 1-12. All fees are quoted in euros.
