HomeOffice of the SpokespersonPress Releases...Designating Leaders and Financial Facilitators of ISIS and al-Qa’ida Cells in Maldives hide Designating Leaders and Financial Facilitators of ISIS and al-Qa’ida Cells in Maldives Press Statement Matthew Miller, Department Spokesperson July 31, 2023 Today, the United States is designating Maldivian supporters of ISIS and al-Qa’ida, including 18 ISIS and ISIS-Khorasan (ISIS-K) facilitators and two al-Qa’ida operatives, along with 29 associated companies. The individuals designated today include leaders and members of Maldives-based terrorist cells and an affiliated criminal gang, in addition to individuals and a company associated with key ISIS-K recruiter Mohamad Ameen who was designated by the United States in 2019. Several of the designated individuals have also planned or carried out attacks that targeted journalists and local authorities. The United States will continue to deter and disrupt financial and other support for terrorist attacks in Maldives. We are also committed to denying funding and resources to these terrorist support networks and countering the local and international threats they pose. These actions are being taken pursuant to Executive Order 13224, as amended, which targets terrorist groups and their supporters.
