CANDIDATE:     Amy Gutmann

Amy Gutmann is the eighth President of the University of Pennsylvania, ranked by Reuters for three years’ running as the fourth most innovative university in the world.  Named by Fortune in 2018 as one of the “World’s 50 Greatest Leaders,” Dr. Gutmann has extensive business and leadership success heading Philadelphia’s largest private employer, with a $14 billion annual economic impact in Pennsylvania.  Her stellar academic and professional career, centered on understanding and defending human rights, constitutional democracy, and national security, makes her well-qualified to serve as U.S. Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany.

The daughter of a German Jewish refugee, and the first in her family to graduate from college, Dr. Gutmann more than doubled the number of students from low-income and first-generation college families at Penn. Her focus on global engagement fueled the creation of the Perry World House on campus, Penn Wharton China Center in Beijing, and the Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement in Washington, D.C.  As a Princeton professor, she was the founding director of the University Center for Human Values and director of the Program in Ethics and Public Affairs.  Dr. Gutmann is also an award-winning author and editor of 17 books, including, with Jonathan D. Moreno, Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven but Nobody Wants to Die: Bioethics and the Transformation of Health Care in America, with an afterword on pandemic ethics for the paperback edition.

Dr. Gutmann earned a B.A. at Harvard-Radcliffe College, an M.S. at the London School of Economics, and a Ph.D. at Harvard.
