The International School of Iceland (ISI) offers an international education in English to students who are in the Greater Reykjavik area for a limited period of time, and an international bilingual education (Icelandic-English) for students who are proficient in Icelandic and make Iceland their home. The school is open for students in grades kindergarten (five years old) to grade 10.

Organization: ISI is a private company with a non-profit mission statement. The governing school board includes five members, one appointed by the U.S. Embassy in Reykjavik. In addition, there is a school council, composed of nine members, and an active Parent Teacher Association.

Curriculum: The curriculum is derived from AERO Common Core Plus Standards and, in grades K-6, the International Primary Curriculum. In grades 7-10, ISI offers the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Program (MYP). The curriculum is enriched by classes such as art, swimming, music, physical education and design. ISI is fully accredited with the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSA).

Faculty: In the 2023-2024 school year, ISI has 16 total staff including 11 teachers, 4 of whom are U.S. citizens, 3 host-country nationals, and 4 third-country nationals. Our staff represent 7 nationalities, including Germany, Holland, US, UK, Australia, Spain and Iceland. All staff members receive regular professional training and must be vetted.

Enrollment: At the start of the 2022-2023 school year, there were 125 students. Of the total, 25 were U.S. citizens, 35 were host-country nationals, and 65 were third-country nationals.

Facilities: The school is located in the suburb of Garðabær, a five-minute drive from the capital. As of August 23, 2023, when the first wing of the new school was completed, ISI has brand new facilities. Additionally, the school is partially housed within portables and a converted farm house on the property. Students walk to the adjoining school for gym, swimming, lunch and access to the playground.

Finances: For the 2023-2024 school year, full tuition for grades K-10 is $26,766 USD. There is an optional bus service fee of $5,850. These fees are payable in U.S. dollars. For students with legal residence in a local municipality, there is a voucher system in place.
