One New Assisted School in 2023-2024

The Office of Overseas Schools is pleased to announce the addition of three new assisted schools to our roster of schools for 2023-2024. This school will serve American families in Gaborone, Botswana.

These three schools join an elite group of 193 schools which are non-profit, non-religious, U.S. accredited, independent, private, co-ed establishments at posts across the world. Each post generally has only one assisted school, which are considered the gold standard in American education overseas.

Westwood International School

Westwood International School (WIS) was established in May 1988 by the professional, business, and diplomatic community in Gaborone, Botswana. The primary purpose of the group was to provide an English medium education for the international community and other interested families. The founders of the school include: the Embassy of the United States of America, the British High Commission, Barclays Bank (now Absa), Sefalana sa Botswana, and Senn Foods. Initially Westwood School was a primary school with reception through year 8. In December 1994, Westwood Secondary School was registered under the Education Act and the School Council was granted special authority (by the Ministry of Education during July 1995) to operate both the primary and secondary schools jointly.  WIS received its first accreditation in 1998 by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC).  WIS is a fully authorized and operational International Baccalaureate (IB) World School.  Today, the school is divided into the primary school (reception-year 6) and the secondary school (year 7-13). The school’s commitment to shaping internationally minded, globally aware students.
