Community Engagement

PEPFAR actively partners with civil society and community stakeholders at every stage of planning, programming, and implementation. This partnership is critical to the success and sustainability of PEPFAR and the global effort to combat HIV. Civil society and communities provide services that are crucial to realize impact on the epidemic; advocate on behalf of beneficiary populations; hold governments accountable; promote human rights, especially for vulnerable groups; identify challenges and gaps in health care delivery; support data collection; and promote transparency.

PEPFAR actively supports and funds community-led monitoring through local independent civil society organizations to routinely and systematically monitor the quality and accessibility of treatment services and the patient-provider experience at the facility level. As a critical partner in the HIV response, community-led monitoring is central to PEPFAR’s client-centered approach to delivering quality HIV services that communities and clients want to access and use.
