Anthony Wier

Anthony Wier's term ended on July 28, 2023.

Mr. Anthony Wier joined the Bureau of International Security and Nonproliferation in January 2021. He currently serves as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Nonproliferation Policy, with a focus on multilateral nuclear and security affairs, including the International Atomic Energy Agency and international nuclear safeguards; international cooperation regarding nuclear energy, safety, and security; and policy aspects of biological weapons nonproliferation. Mr. Wier’s prior work with the State Department includes an appointment in September 2015, when he was named Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Regional, Global and Functional Affairs in the Bureau of Legislative Affairs after having served on the State Department’s Policy Planning Staff, where he focused on nonproliferation and political-military affairs. Mr. Wier has also served as a Senior Professional Staff Member for the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations and as a Program Examiner in the International Affairs Division at the Office of Management and Budget. In addition to his government service, he has worked for the Friends Committee on National Legislation and the Project on Managing the Atom at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government. Mr. Wier holds a Master of Public Affairs and a Master of Arts in Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies from the University of Texas at Austin and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Russian from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas.
