Schutz American School (SAS) is an independent, nonsectarian, coeducational day school. Schutz offers a premier educational program from early childhood (age two) through twelfth grade for students of all nationalities. The program focuses on student centered – inquiry based education in an inclusive and modern learning environment. The school was founded in 1924 and is one of the oldest International American Schools in the world. Schutz will be celebration our 100 Year Anniversary in the 2024 school year.

Organization: The school is governed by a 13-member, self-perpetuation school board, serving renewable 3-year terms. At least one board member is from the U.S. Embassy and a specific percentage of board members must hold foreign passports.

Curriculum: SAS is a fully authorized International Baccalaureate World School (IB) at the primary level offering the Primary Years Program (PYP). SAS is in the final process of authorization for the IB Middle Years Program (MYP) which will be completed Spring 2023. Schutz uses the American Common Core standards, Next Generations Science Standards (NGSS), ISTE standards for technology, and the AERO standards for most other subjects. The SAS early childhood program is play-based and starts at age two. SAS is a model for inquiry and student-centered learning in the region. The school focuses on developing agency within the students to develop a lifelong learner. SAS offers the Advanced Placement (AP) program at the high school and have over 60% of the students taking at least one AP course. The assessment plan is developed to ensure SAS remains relevant and competitive with like schools in the region. SAS utilizes PSAT, SAT, and Measures of Academic Progress (MAP). The language of instruction is English. French is taught as a foreign language beginning in the elementary school and proceeding to AP French. SAS offers a wide range of afterschool and sports activities for our students to participate in throughout the year. Arabic is taught as both a native and foreign language. The school is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. SAS graduates are prepared to meet the requirements for university entrance in some of the most selective schools around the world.

Faculty: In the 2023-2024 school year, SAS has 180 total staff including 62 teachers, 23 of whom are U.S. citizens, 35 host-country nationals, and 4 third-country nationals from four different countries. All teaching faculty are required to maintain a valid and updated teaching certificate/credential from their countries of origin.

Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2023-2024 school year, enrollment is at 256. Of the total, 108 were U.S. citizens, 98 were host-country nationals, and 50 were of other nationalities.

Facilities: The school operates on an eight-acre development. The campus is divided between a primary/elementary campus and our secondary campus. – The elementary school (early childhood-grade 5) and one for the middle and high schools (grades 6-12). Athletic facilities include lighted courts for tennis, basketball, small soccer pitch, and volleyball; a swimming pool; and a gymnasium/weight room. Other facilities include a newly renovated performing arts center with auditorium and specifically designed classes to support drama, music, and dance. SAS has two libraries, a number of designated garden and patio areas for students and families to relax and collaborate in. SAS offers a full-service cafeteria and canteen. The school started modernizations and rejuvenation of the campus in 2021. These renovations will continue through 2025.

Finances: In the 2023-2024 school year; about 98.5% of the school’s income is derived from regular day school tuition and registration fees. Annual tuition rates are as follows: PK: $5,852; kindergarten-grade 5: $16,804; grades 6-8: $20,038; and grades 9-12: $20,938. The school also charges a one-time registration fee of $989 and an annual infrastructure fee of $1,412, as well as an optional bus fee and an optional lunch fee. All fees are payable in U.S. dollars by non-Egyptians and in Egyptian pounds by Egyptians. (Fees quoted above in U.S. dollars.)
