Blinken met today with Japanese Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa and Republic of Korea (ROK) Foreign Minister Park Jin on the sidelines of the East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Jakarta, Indonesia. The Secretary congratulated his counterparts for recent progress in strengthening Japan-ROK ties and stressed the importance of trilateral cooperation in tackling regional and global issues, including efforts to advance a free and open Indo-Pacific, maintain unwavering support for Ukraine, advance an affirmative vision in the Pacific Islands, further our economic security and climate cooperation, and work with ASEAN to support an inclusive and democratic future for Burma. The Secretary reaffirmed the United States’ ironclad commitments to the defense of Japan and the ROK. He also joined Foreign Ministers Hayashi and Park in condemning the DPRK’s continued ballistic missile launches in violation of multiple UN Security Council resolutions, including the July 12 launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile.
