Summit for Democracy: Year of Action Kick-Off Meeting with Civil Society

On December 9-10, 2021, President Biden hosted a Summit for Democracy to bolster democracy worldwide, by taking steps to defend against authoritarianism, fight corruption, and promote respect for human rights both at home and abroad. The Summit brought together leaders from established and emerging democracies to discuss these important themes alongside civil society, private sector representatives, and other stakeholders.  The Summit kicked off a Year of Action, which will culminate in a second Summit in approximately one year’s time.

Civil society plays a critical role in Summit preparations, events, and follow-on activities, including the Year of Action.  This kick-off call will provide attendees a brief recap of the December Summit, highlight key anticipated activities and opportunities for engagement during the Year of Action, and outline opportunities for participants to continue to provide ideas and feedback in the lead up to the second Summit.

We look forward to speaking with you on Thursday, February 10th from 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. EST.  Please note that there will be many participants on this call and the main purpose will be for Summit organizers to outline the framework for the Year of Action and the key role Civil Society members will play in achieving Summit goals.
