Surabaya, Indonesia: Surabaya Intercultural School: 2023-2024 Fact Sheet

The Surabaya Intercultural School is a private, coeducational day school which offers an educational program from preschool (18 months) through grade 12. The school, founded in 1971, is established under Indonesian law with the status of a Foundation (Yayasan). The school year comprises two semesters, starting in early August to December and from early January to early June.

Organization: SIS operates with a seven-member board of patrons and a board of supervisors that is comprised of no more than four members, nominated by the parents or guardians of children enrolled in the school or appointed by the Board of Patrons.

Curriculum: The secondary school follows an American model middle school and high school using the U.S. Common Core, AERO (American Education Reaches Out), and Next Generation Science Standards. It culminates with many Advanced Placement (AP) courses including the AP Capstone Program. The elementary program follows the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Program using the U.S. Common Core, Next Generation Science Standards, and AERO standards. The school is accredited, most recently in 2023, by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

Faculty: In the 2022-2023 school year, Surabaya Intercultural School has 114 total staff including 51 teachers, 11 of whom are U.S. citizens, 29 host-country nationals, and 11 third-country nationals. Our faculty and staff represent 7 nationalities. All teaching staff are fully certified.

Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year, enrollment was 218 (PreK-grade 5: 113, grades 6-8: 48, grades 9-12: 57). Of the total, 24 were U.S. citizens, 66 were host-country nationals, and 129 were third-country nationals.

Facilities: The school has 50 air-conditioned classrooms, a wireless computing environment, a black-box theater, three purpose-built science laboratories, a library, a gymnasium, a playing field, and an Olympic-sized swimming pool. It is a one-to-one laptop school in grades 6-12.

Finances: The current tuition is as follows (all costs are in Indonesia Rupiah): EC 1-2: 75,000,000; EC 3-4: 105,000,000; KG: 225,000,000; Gr 1-5: 250,000,000; Gr 6-8: 275,000,000; and Gr 9-12: 284,500,000. An application fee of Rp.2,700,000 for each application; an enrollment fee of 20,000,000; and a building fund certificate of Rp.30,000,000 per year are levied on all students. (All fees are quoted in Indonesian rupiah.) In addition, we are an Apple platform school. All students in grades 6-12 must have an apple laptop. iPads are provided by the school for students in grades EC – grade 5.
