The American School of Antananarivo (ASA) The American School of Antananarivo (ASA) was founded in September 1969 as an independent, nonsectarian, coeducational day school. Its function is to provide an excellent education in an international setting to children through grade 12. ASA is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and is authorized for the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (PYP) and Diploma Program (DP). The school year comprises two semesters extending from mid-August through early June.

Organization: A seven voting member Board of Trustees governs the school. The U.S. Ambassador appoints one member. Each member serves a two-year term. Members are elected each April by the Association, which consists of parents and teachers. At least four board members must hold U.S citizenship.

Curriculum: The curriculum is based on U.S. academic standards, along with the International Baccalaureate programs. Instruction is in English. The first DP exams will be in May 2020. ASA has a student services team which provides support for English Language Learners and learning support for students with mild-moderate learning needs.

Faculty: In the 2023-2024 school year, ASA has 62 total staff including 35 teachers, 12 of whom are U.S. citizens, 7 host-country nationals, and 16 third-country nationals. Our faculty and staff represent 14 nationalities including UK, Canadian, French, German, Indian, Netherlands, Filipino, Australian, Kenyan, Spanish, Uzbekistan, and South African. All teaching Faculty maintain a teaching certificate/credential from their countries of origin or overseas.

Enrollment: As of October 2023, enrollment is 256 (K-grade 5: 90; grades 6-8: 62; grades 9-12: 104) Of the total, 52 are U.S. citizens, 61 are host-country nationals, and 143 are third-country nationals.

Facilities: In July 2017, ASA moved to a new campus located in the beautiful and secure Le Park Alarobia compound in Ivandry. The ASA campus features innovative and flexible learning spaces, state of the art science labs, performing arts hall, technology and media centers, maker spaces, and several sports venues.

Finances: Approximately 97% of the school’s income derives from tuition. The annual tuition rates are as follows, in USD: K-grade 5: $23,147, and grades 6-10: $26,368 and grades 11-12: $26,854. The school also charges an annual registration fee of $250, a one-time capital levy fee of $6,000, and a pre-registration fee of $150 (to be paid on application). There are extra charges for the school bus, canteen, instrument hire, and learning support. There are external exam fees for 12th grade.
