Rangoon, Burma: The International School Yangon: 2023-2024 Fact Sheet

The International School Yangon (ISY) is a private, coeducational day school, which offers an educational program from pre-Kindergarten through grade 12 for students of all nationalities who desire a U.S. education.  The school was founded in 1955.  The school year begins the third week of August and ends the second week of June.

Organization: The school is governed by an 10-member board of trustees of whom four are elected for two-year terms by the ISY Association, the sponsor of the school. Membership in the association is automatically conferred on the parents or guardians of children enrolled in the school. The school is nonprofit and nonsectarian.

Curriculum: ISY provides an American, internationally influenced, standards-based, curriculum where a comprehensive range of academics and activities are offered. In the high school, the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program is offered in grades 11 and 12. The language of instruction is English with Spanish, Mandarin and French taught as additional languages. The assessment program includes the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) growth, the Writing Assessment Program (WrAP), the Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages (AAPPL), and the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) in addition to the broad spectrum of IB exams in grades 11 and 12. ISY is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, authorized by the International Baccalaureate (IB) Organization, and is a member of the East Asia Regional Council of Schools (EARCOS) and Association for the Advancement of International Education (AAIE). ISY graduates are accepted by selective universities in the United States and other countries.

Admissions: All applicants must complete an online application prior to enrollment. Enrollment for students with special education needs (SEN) and English Language Learners (ELL) needs will be limited by space and resource availability. Admission decisions are based on an assessment of available human resources and the school’s ability to provide quality learning opportunities for all its students.

Faculty: In the 2023-2024 school year, ISY has 135 total staff including 70 teachers, 19 of whom are U.S. citizens, 21 host-country nationals, and 30 third-country nationals. Our faculty and staff represent 17 number of nationalities, including Australia, Austria, Canada, Chile, China, Ecuador, France, Germany, India, Mexico, Myanmar, Nepal, New Zealand, South Africa, Spain, UK and US.

Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2023-2024 school year, including ISY Nay Pyi Taw, enrollment was 433 (PreK-Grade 5:182: Grades 6-8: 114; Grades 9-12: 137). Of the total, 22 are U.S. citizens, 260 are host-country national students, and 151 are third-country nationals.

Facilities: The school campus consists of six buildings on a four-acre site in a residential area of Yangon and features a well-equipped library; music, art and drama facilities along with a Makerspace; five science labs; a new clinic; a cafeteria; and three food vendors providing healthy options to students.  Sports facilities include a large two-court gym, 25 -meter swimming pool, a newly laid artificial turf soccer field, an open-air covered basketball/Volleyball court, and a fully equipped fitness room.  In the summer of 2019, a brand new playground was installed.

Finances: In 2023-2024 school year, about 98 percent of school’s income drives from school tuition and other fees. The annual tuition rates are: PK: $15,948; K-5: $24,994; 6-8: $27,696; 9-12: $28,358. The school charges a one-time registration fee of $9,500 for grades K-12. (All fees quoted in U.S dollars.)
