Panama is a dynamic, rapidly growing democratic partner, and is one of our most important trading partners in Central America. We posted a $7.9 billion trade surplus with Panama in 2011, a 38.4% increase over 2010. The Agreement will strengthen our relationship with another strategic partner in the Western Hemisphere. The Agreement can result in significant liberalization of trade in goods and services, including financial services. It also includes important disciplines relating to customs administration and trade facilitation, technical barriers to trade, government procurement, investment, telecommunications, electronic commerce, intellectual property rights, and labor and environmental protection.
