Uruguayan American School (UAS)  offers three accredited programs of study: U.S. high school diploma, Uruguayan high school diploma, and International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma. The New England Association of Schools and Colleges fully accredited the school, and it is the only Uruguayan school to maintain the U.S. academic calendar. UAS has approximately 330 students from nursery through grade 12. Through the school’s commitment to maintaining small class sizes, the school allows students to participate in many after-school activities, clubs, and sports while receiving individual academic attention. UAS offers basketball, soccer, swimming, and volleyball; teams compete in regional tournaments.

Organization: Founded in 1958, UAS is a nonsectarian, nonprofit, coeducational day school, governed by a nine-member board of governors elected for three-year terms by the Uruguayan American School Civil Association.

Curriculum: UAS offers an American program modeled after U.S. public and private schools, combined with fully accredited Uruguayan programs that give our students the flexibility of choosing from a wider selection of local and international universities. Instruction is given in English. Grades 1-5 receive instruction in language, arts, mathematics, social studies, science, art, computer science, physical education, drama, and music as preparation for the college preparatory program at the secondary level. The secondary program is divided into a middle school program (grades 6-8) and a high school program (grades 9-12). The IB Diploma Program is offered to students in grades 11 and 12. These programs are geared toward the development of the knowledge and skills necessary for entrance into U.S. universities. Most graduates attend college in the U.S., but some have also entered universities in Canada, Europe, and South America.

Faculty: In the 2023-2024 school year, UAS has 54 total staff including 54 teachers, 15 of whom are U.S. citizens, 30 host-country nationals, and 9 third-country nationals. UAS faculty includes Learning Specialists and Counselors in Elementary and Secondary School and a College Counselor in Secondary School.

Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2023–2024 school year, enrollment is 316. Of the total, 79 are U.S. citizens, 85 are host-country nationals, and 152 are third-country nationals. The student population represents 31 different countries.

Facilities: The school spreads across three hectares and occupies 7,100 square meters of building space from the nursery through the secondary school. Primary and secondary sections are separate from each other. Special facilities include a full-service cafeteria, a library, three science laboratories, a computer room, a music room, a drama room, an auditorium, and two large gymnasiums that include a fully equipped weight room and two locker rooms. The outside facilities include a soccer field, a basketball court, and three playground areas.

Finances: For the 2023-2024 school year, semester tuition rates are: N, PK & K: $5,260; grades 1-5: $8,490; and grades 6-12: $10,055. A one-time registration fee of $ 9,500 is levied on all students from nursery through grade 12. Tuition and registration fee are charged in U.S. dollars.
