CANDIDATE:     Peter Hendrick Vrooman

Peter Hendrick Vrooman, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, class of Minister-Counselor, has been the U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Rwanda since 2018.  He previously served as Chargé d’Affaires a.i. and Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.  He is a former Director for Iraq on the National Security Council Staff and was Deputy Political Counselor at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations in New York.  With three decades of diplomatic experience in Africa, the Middle East, India, the United Nations, and at the Department of State and the National Security Council, Mr. Vrooman is well-qualified to serve as U.S. Ambassador to Mozambique.

Previously, Mr. Vrooman served as the Spokesperson of the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi, Senior Adviser for Northern Iraq at U.S. Embassy Baghdad, and Deputy Political Counselor at U.S. Embassy Tel Aviv.  He was an Economic/Commercial Attaché and Political Officer at U.S. Embassy Beirut.  He also served at the Department of State as the Algeria Desk Officer and as a Watch Officer in the Operations Center.  His first overseas assignments were to U.S. Embassy Djibouti and the U.S. Liaison Office, Mogadishu, Somalia.

Mr. Vrooman earned a M.S from the National Defense University, Industrial College of the Armed Forces (ICAF), and an A.B. from Harvard College.  He is the recipient of twenty Department of State awards, including the joint Department of Commerce and Department of State Benjamin Joy Award for Commercial Diplomacy in Ethiopia and a Group Valor Award for his service in Somalia.  He speaks French and Arabic as well as some Kinyarwanda, Hebrew, German, and Portuguese.
