S/TECH is designed to provide a locus of additional expertise and energy to develop and coordinate international policy on priority emerging technologies. It helps lead emerging technology diplomacy and develop the international partnerships agenda on technology priorities.

Working in collaboration across the Department, S/TECH coordinates Department-wide policy and leads the development of strategy on the range of priority technologies including AI, quantum, and biotechnology. S/TECH will also ensure the Department has integrated approaches to complex cross-cutting technology issues. In all these areas, the United States must complement domestic policies with strong international approaches to anchor allied techno-industrial supply chains, cultivate STEM talent, protect the integrity of the allied technology ecosystem, and advance standards.

S/TECH includes a policy team to lead strategic planning and policy development, and a partnership team to coordinate diplomatic partnerships and engagements.
