From July 29 – August 2, PEPFAR is joining partners, advocates, researchers, thought leaders, and others from around the world at the 24th International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2022) in Montreal, Canada. The theme of AIDS 2022 is “Re-engage and Follow the Science.” PEPFAR is doing just that by saving and improving tens of millions of lives, supporting dozens of countries to dramatically expand broader access to health care within their populations, reaching those left behind, leveraging partnerships for sustainability, and bringing us closer than ever to ending HIV/AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.
When PEPFAR began, only 50,000 people in Africa were on lifesaving HIV treatment. Today, after more than 19 years, PEPFAR supports nearly 19 million men, women, and children with life-saving HIV treatment and has saved over 21 million lives, prevented millions of HIV infections, and helped revolutionize the global HIV/AIDS response. We have also invested billions of dollars in strengthening the systems that drive effective, efficient, and sustainable health care – supporting laboratories, health care workers, and supply chains to improve the ability of countries with sizable HIV/AIDS burdens to swiftly address outbreaks, including Ebola, H1N1, cholera, COVID-19, and now monkeypox.

The U.S. government is deeply committed to ending the HIV/AIDS pandemic and advancing global progress toward the UN Sustainable Development Goal target of ending the HIV/AIDS pandemic as a public health threat by 2030. A strong, global coalition of people with lived HIV experiences, government leaders at all levels across the world, community advocates, health care workers, public health professionals, NGOs, and other domestic and international partners have dramatically increased access to revolutionary HIV treatment and prevention tools and strengthened the national and global responses to other infectious diseases and outbreaks.

PEPFAR builds bridges by leveraging the power of partnerships to work closely with foreign governments, the private sector, philanthropic organizations, multilateral institutions, civil society and faith-based organizations, and people living with HIV/AIDS. Through these partnerships, PEPFAR accelerates progress and promotes the long-term sustainability of the HIV/AIDS response. For the first time in modern history, we have the opportunity to control a pandemic without a vaccine or a cure, laying the groundwork for eventually eliminating or eradicating HIV.

At AIDS 2022, PEPFAR will release new resources and announcements about the impressive progress the program is making toward ending HIV/ AIDS.
